Andrei Znamenski is the author of Red Shambhala: Magic, Prophecy, and Geopolitics in the Heart of Asia (Quest Books, 2011) and The Beauty of the Primitive: Indigenous Shamanism and Western Imagination (Oxford University Press, 2007) as well as many other writings on the history of spirituality and esotericism in Europe, Russia, America, and Tibet, etc.

We talk to Andrei about what Shamanism is, the history of the study of Shamanism, from Mircea Eliade to Michael Harner, and what it says about the condition of spirituality in the world today.
